THE PURE, CURED ESSENCE OF IRIS ROOTS

Opulent Orris Root Essential Oil is a tenaciously smooth, supercritical extraction of Iris rhizomes that emits an luxuriant aroma of rooty caramel notes cushioned by soft, powdery edges and enveloped in a hint of warm brandy. This rare essence synergizes the ancient reverence of a regally regarded flower with a decadent bouquet cloistered within its richly scented roots that unfolds on the skin with a sweet whisper of woodland violet.

Specially stored and aged underground for three years, ephemeral Iris's hidden roots offer a base note of abundant aroma. While the living blossoms exude the signature, sweet smell of Iris, it is the patient, dark quiet of the earth that coaxes the roots into aromatic excellence. During this multi-year curing process, the rhizomes slowly oxidize, dramatically surpassing the flowers in their concentration of irones, the rare, precious phytochemicals that give Orris its ethereal aroma.

The Iris flower dates back to antiquity, when it was named after the goddess Isis, the divine messenger who walked upon rainbows to bridge heaven and earth. Like its patron deity, the Iris flower expresses a brilliant, rainbow-like multitude of colorful petticoats of yellows, pinks, whites, and violet-blues emerging from the soil each spring. Yet, the aromatic fascination has always been subterranean. The ancient Greeks and Romans coveted Orris as a master fixative, blending the powdered roots into their most luxurious perfume unguents. During the Renaissance, Catherine de' Medici sparked the trend of using Orris to scent leather gloves. By the 17th century, Orris roots were pulverized into a highly prized hair powder for royalty, creating the fabled poudre de violette and pomatums, essential cosmetics for the courts of Europe.

Orris remains one of the more exclusive and expensive ingredients in perfumery, as the root yields little oil: it takes over 30 kilograms of raw, aged Orris roots to create a single kilogram of this precious supercritical extract. It is the best base note as it gives sweet depth without earthiness: its dreamy, creamy, caramel-powdery aroma has a slow-motion scent velocity that lassoes lighter top notes and bridges the base.

Beyond its esteem in perfumes, this pure supercritical extract is an untapped beauty secret. When Orris is introduced into a fluid plant lipid like organic Jojoba, Rosehips, Tamanu or MCT oil, it becomes an opulent unguent offering velvety restoration for the skin. The molecular architecture of Orris root introduces a lipid-quintessence to the complexion. This super-concentrated balmy substance is achieved through an extraction that echoes the resinous unguents of antiquity, yet imbued with a new, full phytochemical spectrum, a juicy wax-and-volatile-rich substance like no other.

This structural depth is driven by a saturated concentration of tetradecanoic acid (28%), a root-derived fatty acid that imparts a cushiony tactile finish, softening and sealing the stratum corneum. Boosted by a biocompatible lipid matrix of caprylic/capric triglycerides and key diglycerides (specifically 1,2-dioctanoin and 1,3-dioctanoin) these juicier molecules interact intimately with the skin’s native lipid structure. Together, they create an opulent occlusive layer for infusing skin hydration to prevent transepidermal water loss while honoring the skin's natural respiration.

This replenishing phytochemistry is cocooned within an aromatic sanctuary defined by Orris's cured irones, specifically cis-α-irone and cis-γ-irone. These molecules illuminate Orris’s iconic, powdery-violet soul and perform a dual destiny: they suffuse a slow-motion scent that lingers beautifully on the skin, while simultaneously imparting an isoflavone fortification that tones tissue, smooths the appearance of scars, and invites natural luminescence. When integrated into a lipid a beautiful biological synergy for skincare unfolds: the lipid gives glide and balances the sebaceous system, while the dense, fatty-acid-rich Orris matrix cushions, restores, and aromatically adores.

"Its fragrance is like violets – sweet, flowery, warm, and comforting. Its heavenly scent helps balance the mind, dissolves mental or emotional blocks, and helps stimulate creativity, intuition and love. In perfumes iris oil is used as a fixative... in precious skin lotions, since it pampers, and cleanses facial skin." — Susanne Fischer-Rizzi, Complete Aromatherapy Handbook

“...from the top floor of our house at Combray, from the little room that smelled of orris-root... In vain I compressed the whole landscape into my field of vision, draining it with an exhaustive gaze...” — Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time (Remembrance of Things Past)

“Whence did it come from, that whiff of orris root?” — Charles R. Forrest, The Kiss

ORRIS ROOT: DISTILLATION DETAILS + APPLICATIONS

The 18th-Century Cosmetic Courtship with Orris Root
Long before the chemical synthesis that captured the nineteenth century, Orris root was the crown jewel of European court cosmetics and scents, revered for its reminiscent scent of the wild Woodland Violet. To capture this coveted, mossy-sweet freshness, eighteenth-century apothecaries dried the rhizomes of the Iris plant. When aged for a minimum of three years, the root undergoes a slow transformation, developing irones that mirror the elusive aroma of wild violets. This aromatic root became the foundational ingredient in the era's olfactory traditions, including the legendary poudre de violette. This finely milled powder was applied as an absorbing dry shampoo for the hair and as a silk-textured powder for face and body. Orris was also macerated with spirits to create refreshing eau de violette as cordials and complexion mists.

APPLICATIONS
Delectable as a luxury base note in artisanal perfumery, bespoke essential oil blends, and deeply restorative skincare balms. Because of its unique, lipid-rich extraction profile, this opulent essence serves as both an exquisite aromatic anchor and a multi-correctional topical for hyperpigmentation and barrier repair.

Artisanal Perfumery + Alcohol Dilutions
Though Orris Root extract carries a rich, cushiony lipid profile, it solubilizes beautifully in high-proof alcohol (such as organic 190+ proof grape or grain alcohol). In clean perfumery, its dense molecular architecture acts as a natural fixative, lassoing volatile top notes and slowing down their evaporation velocity. When mixed with alcohol, the ethereal, powdery irones split from the heavier plant waxes to aerate the bloom of the perfume.

“The tulip-beds across the road flamed like throbbing rings of fire. A white dust — a tremulous cloud of orris-root it seemed — hung in the panting air.” — Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

Orris Ointment: Spot On Serums
Bringing the subterranean intelligence of the Iris rhizome into daily skincare is easy and effective. It can be applied as a straight-up spot-on paste, or as a super-concentrated ratio of a tiny drop of paste mixed with three drops of an essence like Frankincense, and combined with a lipid finishing layer of a sublime serum.

Orris On-the-Spot Ointment:
To intercept hyperpigmentation patches and melasma at the basal layer, apply the Orris paste in its pure form. Take a tiny smidge of pure Orris paste, just a toothpick tip is enough, and apply it directly onto target areas. Or, mix a tiny dab of Orris paste with 2 drops of Frankincense, Rose Otto, Sandalwood, Spikenard, Mastic essential oil, or a Dew Dab on your palm and apply evenly to hyperpigmented areas.

Orris Skin Serum:
Follow your targeted spot paste with an all-over lipid layer. This formula delivers a total 5% active botanical concentration to soothe the skin biome and prevent transepidermal water loss. In a glass dropper bottle, combine 3% Supercritical Orris Root extract and 2% of an additional essential oil (such as Frankincense, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Rose Otto, or Cape Chamomile) with organic Jojoba Oil or MCT oil. Smooth over the face and neck, morning and night.

Orris Root Phytochemical Signatures
The gas chromatography (GC-FID) and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) testing guarantees botanical purity and lists the phytochemicals found. The aromatic soul of Orris Root is defined by its irones, specifically cis-α-irone and cis-γ-irone. Though appearing in trace percentages, these rare, cured molecules are so aromatically powerful that they entirely define Orris’s iconic, powdery-violet scent. This buttery-powdery profile is seamlessly carried in a rich, skin-loving lipid matrix of caprylic/capric triglycerides and key diglycerides like 1,2-dioctanoin and 1,3-dioctanoin, which interact intimately with skin chemistry to provide unparalleled fixative depth and slow-motion scent velocity. Weaving this decadent bouquet together is tetradecanoic acid (comprising over 28% of the extract), a rich, root-derived fatty acid that imparts a comforting, skin-pampering tactile finish and honors the legendary, buttery consistency of traditional Orris.

ORRIS ROOT: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a supercritical CO2 extraction, and how does it compare to Orris concrete or Orris absolute?
Ancient apothecaries and monastic perfumers captured Orris with reverent patience. After curing Iris roots for years to sequester and exponentiate the scent, the dried roots were crushed into a fine powder to be macerated in spirits or pressed into fragrant pomades. The legendary perfumers of the 18th and 19th centuries only had access to Orris concrete (a hard, waxy "butter" produced via high-heat steam distillation) or Orris absolute (extracted with solvents). Supercritical CO2 extraction is a good, low-heat method that uses pure, pressurized carbon dioxide to extract the root's aromatic quintessence without high heat or chemical solvents. This pristine process captures the plant's full structural majesty: an aromatic core rich in tetradecanoic (myristic) acid and a naturally occurring glyceride matrix. By preserving these delicate, volatile nuances and native lipids that other methods left behind, it delivers a far more aromatically dense substance and layered fragrance profile.

Traditional Orris "butter" is a hard, solid wax. Why is this CO2 more malleable?
Traditional steam distillation selectively isolates the root's volatile essential oils, which are laden with tetradecanoic (myristic) acid, a fatty acid with a high melting point. Consequently, the resulting traditional concrete inevitably hardens into a solid, stubborn brick at room temperature that requires meticulous melting before each use. In contrast, our pure supercritical CO2 extract draws out the root's full lipid spectrum, bringing a balanced matrix of caprylic/capric triglycerides. This fulsome lipid extract creates a malleable substance that retains Orris’s legendary, slow-motion scent velocity and velvety "cushioning" effect for skin and scent without the waxy, amorphous solidification. Both methods yield an entirely unadulterated botanical product, but the CO2 process keeps the essence more nuanced and fully workable.
